Designed to complement Montessori geography and zoology activities, this beautiful fabric set encourages children to explore the seven continents through hands-on sorting and classification.

The circular Earth Mat features the Earth in the centre, surrounded by seven clearly labelled, colour-coded continent sections. Seven coordinating categorisation mats provide individual work areas for children to sort animal picture cards, miniature animal figures or other objects according to the continent where they are found.

The mats can be arranged around the central Earth Mat, creating an inviting, hands-on activity that encourages independent exploration and discovery.

This set includes the following handmade fabric items:

• 1 × Earth Mat – featuring the Earth in the centre, surrounded by seven labelled, colour-coded continent sections.

• 7 × coordinating categorisation mats – one for each continent, providing a dedicated space for children to sort their cards or miniature figures.

• 1 × handy little elasticated storage bag – perfect for keeping your animal picture cards or miniature animal figures together when the activity is not in use.

Each mat is sewn using 100% cotton fabric with a beautiful linen lining.

The mats are constructed with 2oz polyester wadding, providing durability, stability and structure while remaining soft and easy for children to handle.

The coloured continent sections are individually appliquéd and finished with appliqué stitching. Vinyl labels clearly identify each continent, providing a visual reference for children as they work.

The set follows the traditional Montessori continent colours:

• Africa – green

• Asia – yellow

• Europe – red

• South America – pink

• North America – orange

• Antarctica – white

• Oceania / Australasia – brown  PLEASE CHOOSE FROM THE OPTIONS WHICH LABEL YOU WOULD PREFER PRINTED ON THE MAT.

How to Use

Place the Earth Mat in the centre of the work area and arrange the seven coordinating categorisation mats around it, matching each mat to its corresponding labelled continent section.

The child can then select an animal picture card or miniature animal figure, identify the continent where the animal is found and place it onto the corresponding categorisation mat.

The activity can be adapted to suit the child’s developmental stage. Begin with just two or three continents and a small selection of familiar animals, gradually introducing more continents and animals as their knowledge and confidence develop.

The mats can also be used for sorting other geography-related picture cards and objects, making them a versatile addition to your Montessori learning environment.

To keep your handmade sorting mats looking their best:

Hand wash only • Hang to dry • Warm iron

Gentle care is recommended to help preserve the appliqué stitching, vinyl labels and shape of the mats. Avoid ironing directly over the vinyl labels.
